Book Restoration Workshop

Sunday 19 May 2024 - Scarborough

  • 75 British pounds
  • Scarborough - Workshops & Courses

Available spaces

Many of you may have a much-loved book on your shelves which is now beginning to show its age. Common faults are joints which are splitting, a spine which has become detached or the boards working loose. Sadly, at this point, many people reach for the adhesive tape or even one of the proprietary tapes advertised for the purpose, but neither will provide a satisfactory repair and may well cause irreparable damage to the binding. In this workshop you will learn about book structure which will then enable you to employ the correct restoration technique which will result in a book which is sound and ready for another hundred years of use, whilst maintaining the integrity of the original binding. No previous bookbinding experience is necessary and all that is required is a careful and precise approach, following a step-by-step demonstration. Don't worry if you don't have a book to restore, we have plenty for you to choose from. Whilst books requiring restoration will be provided, if you have a book of your own (not leather) which you would like to bring along, it should be possible to use this as your project. Brian Cole has run a bookbinding business for nearly twenty years carrying out restoration work for a range of institutions including The Elizabeth Gaskell House Museum, the Captain Cook Museum in Whitby, the Lady Lever Gallery in Port Sunlight and others. For about six years he was bookbinder/restorer in residence at the Leeds Library, founded in 1768 and the oldest subscription library in the country. He now operates from a shop in Scarborough Market Hall. Sunday 19 May 2024 10am - 4pm with Brian Cole This workshop takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP Includes all materials, refreshments and lunch.
