During this four-day watercolour and gouache masterclass with Jeremy Ford you'll embark on a comprehensive exploration of watercolour and gouache, two versatile and expressive mediums. This masterclass is designed to welcome artists of all skill levels - whether you're a complete beginner picking up a brush for the first time or an experienced painter looking to deepen your skills. Hosted primarily indoors, the course offers a comfortable and focused setting, with the exciting possibility of stepping outside for reference work if the weather permits, adding a touch of spontaneity to your creative process. The journey begins with understanding the fundamental properties of these paints - how they flow, blend, and layer on paper. You'll learn essential techniques for paint handling, such as creating smooth washes, building rich textures with layering, and adding fine details with precision. Jeremy’s expert instruction will guide you through each step, ensuring you gain confidence in manipulating these mediums to achieve a wide range of effects. As the course progresses, you’ll follow Jeremy’s unique step-by-step approach to painting a diverse array of subjects. From serene landscapes to a vibrant still life, you’ll have the opportunity to apply your newfound skills in practical, hands-on projects. You’ll explore the principles of colour theory and learn how to mix and apply colours effectively using a carefully curated selection of pigments. This will help you to discover how to craft harmonious compositions, evoke specific moods, and bring your artwork to life through intentional colour choices. Jeremy studied Graphic Design at Southport College of Art, (1972-5) and Illustration at Harrow College of Art, London (1975-8) and has been a professional artist and illustrator since, working on a wide variety of books, magazines and greeting cards. Jeremy undertakes commissions in all paint media and has done work for The Royal Horticultural Society, Bradford Exchange Limited Edition Plates, RCA Records, The British Tourist Authority and American Express Travel Guides, amongst many others. He has demonstrated for St. Cuthbert's Paper Mill, the makers of Bockingford and Saunders Waterford watercolour papers, and was Senior Tutor and Principal UK demonstrator for the Michael Wilcox School of Colour. This Masterclass includes a full board four-night stay at Cober Hill, just outside Scarborough. Check in from 3pm on Monday 17th November 2025.
Cancellation Policy
All Classes, Courses, Workshops and Masterclasses are priced including VAT charged at 20%. By completing this purchase you are securing a place for the Masterclass and accommodation at Cober Hill. We understand that plans can change, so we’ve outlined our cancellation and rescheduling policies for our masterclass and accommodation at Ampleforth Abbey to ensure clarity and flexibility. Masterclass Rescheduling: You can reschedule your booking up to 4 weeks before the start of the masterclass. We will transfer your booking to an alternative date and provide written confirmation of the change. Cancellations: You may cancel your booking up to 4 weeks before the masterclass for a full refund, which will be processed to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Within 4 Weeks of the Event: Cancellations made less than 4 weeks before the masterclass will not be refunded. However, if we are able to rebook your place within the 4 week period we will be able to process a full refund. Accommodation Rescheduling: Accommodation can be rescheduled up to 6 weeks before your stay, subject to availability. We will confirm the new booking details in writing. Cancellations: You may cancel your accommodation booking up to 6 weeks before your stay for a full refund. Within 6 Weeks of the Stay: Cancellations made within 6 weeks of the arrival date will incur a 50% cancellation fee. If we are able to rebook your accommodation, we will refund the remaining balance to your original payment method. Your Right to Cancel If you are a customer living in the United Kingdom or the European Union you have the right to cancel your contract to purchase services from us within 14 days of purchase without giving notice. The cancellation period will end 14 days from the date of purchase when you purchased a service.
