Thursday Experimentation and Abstraction

Thursdays 1.30pm - 4pm

15 British pounds
Scarborough - Pay-As-You-Go

This pay-as-you-go class is about experimenting with the materials and the conventions we associate with painting and, more broadly, making. It’s to do with the coloured mud we call paint and the sorts of supports we paint onto such as canvas. And not forgetting the various devices we use to give shape and structure to our ideas - like grids, perspective, theories on colour - even rules like ‘fat over lean’. What about taking an open-ended approach to all this and really getting under the skin of process and gesture, throwing in attitude and stirring in a willingness to either fail or skirt close to it. So, for instance, why not root out some old painting you think is below par (better still, one you think is pretty good) and introduce it to a pair of scissors and some glue... or a photocopier. Every week, we’ll look at ways in which we might begin the process of painting and making. Not just for cherished final outcomes, but for the experience of trying stuff out and moving beyond the banality of our own fixed tastes. Let's think while we're making/unmaking, too. So, why come to this class? Well, the various modernisms have happened and we live in a secular society that won’t demand our heads on sticks for breaking rules. And because it might be fun. Your tutor Chris will spend some time at the start of each session introducing an idea, some way of working, an approach that might be of interest... and we’ll take it from there, together maybe, alone perhaps. It’s up in the air. You can decide... and if you want to paint rabbits, then we have a lovely group that gathers on Wednesdays. Thursdays 1.30pm - 4pm with Chris Shaw This pay-as-you-go class takes place at: North Yorks Art School 2-4 South Street Scarborough YO11 2BP
