Oil Portraiture from Life Masterclass

Why do we still paint portraits when there’s a camera on every phone? When, surely, everything portraiture has to say has already been said? We come back to it, again and again, because people are the central force in our lives and painting someone - especially from life - is a unique vehicle to pick apart how we understand and connect with each other, how we see those around us, and how our point of view is intrinsic in those connections. This workshop will cover the foundations of painting an oil portrait from life. Brogan will take the students through the bones of portraiture, including creating a composition from life with preparatory charcoal sketches, capturing a sitter’s essence through body language, colour, and detail, and the technical tips that go into creating dynamic and characterful portraits. Far from being prescriptive about what portraiture “should be”, what Brogan offers is foundational instruction for painting from life in an open and encouraging environment so artists can take these practical building blocks and invest in their own styles. Brogan Bertie is an artist based in Margate and winner of Sky Art’s Portrait Artist of the Year 2024. His practice is rooted in connection. Preferring to paint from life, his portraits offer an energetic and intimate insight into the sitters. Using the physicality of oil paint, Brogan creates rich and textural works that construct an honest yet tender portrait of human connection and complexity. Rejecting a prescriptive ethos, Brogan is a firm believer that art classes should be about facilitating the student to find their own interest and follow their unique vision. Cancelations within 4 weeks of the event will not be refunded, however bookaclass.org will look to reschedule you onto a future bookaclass.org event. The cancellation period will end 14 days from the date of purchase when you purchased a service.
