Join Finn Campbell-Notman ARCA, winner of Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year 2023 for a week-long landscape painting masterclass. In this four-day landscape masterclass, Finn will guide his students through practical and theoretical elements, focusing on how individual experiences shape meaningful compositions. The course includes group tuition and demonstrations in addition to one-to-one support. Day 1: Explore composition through guided sketching in Cober Hill's gardens. Learn to select elements for impactful paintings. Day 2: Sketch to capture light and mood, making colour notes, then develop drawings in the studio, starting with a monochrome study to understand tone. Day 3: Focus on colour—mixing tones and using monochrome guides and colour notes to create full-colour paintings. Day 4: Weather permitting, a plein air session applying what we've learned in prior lessons is followed by a group discussion on personal expression in the works. This four-day course is about how painting the landscape around us can be infused with our own personal experiences and preferences - with a focus on what the landscape means to us as individuals. Through our drawings and notes, through memory and feeling, we will be encouraged to create our paintings from our own personal points of view. Finn's guidance throughout this four-day course includes all the technical know-how that will bring our very personal landscapes to fruition. About Finn Finn was commissioned by Royal Museums Greenwich to paint a seascape for the Van de Velde exhibition at Queen’s House. After years living and painting in Spain and Belgium, he returned to the UK in 2023, exhibiting regularly with Sladers Yard, where he held his first solo show - Dreamscapes - in 2024. His work spans traditional oil paintings, which connect the artist’s inner landscape with the external world, and large-scale charcoal drawings made from forest fire charcoal (with sales aiding land restoration). Both mediums link personal experience to the environment. This Masterclass includes a full board four-night stay at Cober Hill. This Masterclass takes place Tuesday-Thursday 10am-4pm and Friday 10am-12.30pm.
Cancellation Policy
All Classes, Courses, Workshops and Masterclasses are priced including VAT charged at 20%. By completing this purchase you are securing a place for the Masterclass and accommodation at Cober Hill. We understand that plans can change, so we’ve outlined our cancellation and rescheduling policies for our masterclass and accommodation at Ampleforth Abbey to ensure clarity and flexibility. Masterclass Rescheduling: You can reschedule your booking up to 4 weeks before the start of the masterclass. We will transfer your booking to an alternative date and provide written confirmation of the change. Cancellations: You may cancel your booking up to 4 weeks before the masterclass for a full refund, which will be processed to your original payment method within 3–5 business days. Within 4 Weeks of the Event: Cancellations made less than 4 weeks before the masterclass will not be refunded. However, if we are able to rebook your place within the 4 week period we will be able to process a full refund. Accommodation Rescheduling: Accommodation can be rescheduled up to 6 weeks before your stay, subject to availability. We will confirm the new booking details in writing. Cancellations: You may cancel your accommodation booking up to 6 weeks before your stay for a full refund. Within 6 Weeks of the Stay: Cancellations made within 6 weeks of the arrival date will incur a 50% cancellation fee. If we are able to rebook your accommodation, we will refund the remaining balance to your original payment method. Your Right to Cancel If you are a customer living in the United Kingdom or the European Union you have the right to cancel your contract to purchase services from us within 14 days of purchase without giving notice. The cancellation period will end 14 days from the date of purchase when you purchased a service.
